Get Growing with a Variety of Soil Options

Because there are as many opinions about growing good grass as there are about raising good kids, Hengel offers a variety of topsoil materials.

Some are pulverized for easy spreading and still others contain different concentrations of peat. Whatever your leanings, Hengel is sure to have a black dirt product to meet your needs. We categorize our fill and black dirt options as follows:

Regular black dirt: this material is harvested from local sources and is often referred to as “top soil” as only the very top layer of soil is gathered. This product is delivered in its natural form and may contain small roots, etc. This economical option works well when large areas are to be seeded.

Pulverized Black Dirt: this product is regular black dirt that has been screened. The screening process removes any clumps, roots and small rocks, making it a very uniform, easy-to-use material. It is especially good for high-visibility areas that are to be seeded.

Fortified Lawn & Garden Soil: this material is made up of pulverized black dirt to which peat has been added. This addition improves the fertility and physical structure of the soil. The peat also provides moisture and nutrient retention qualities.

FAQS

Q: What is a cubic yard?

A. If you picture a box that is three feet tall, three feet deep and three feet wide, that’s one cubic yard. All concrete, sand, aggregate and topsoil products are measured by the cubic yard. One cubic yard covers eighty square feet at four inches deep.

Q: How do I figure out how many cubic yards of product I need?

A. The calculator page is a good place to start. When you have an irregularly shaped area, as most are, you simply have to estimate the average length, width and depth when imputing data into the calculator. If you want some help or have a question, call us at (218) 746-3355.

Q: How much will my truck hold?

A. A standard half-ton pickup will hold about ½ yard of material.
